English Classes (ESL)

College Students in Classroom

MAM’s adult English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are for people who want to speak and understand English better. Non-native English speakers will be empowered to go to work and participate in their children’s education and our community.

 

There are six instructional levels, from Foundations for Beginners to Advanced. Classes are offered both virtually and in person, with each semester lasting 12 weeks in the spring and fall, and 10 weeks in the summer.

MAM classes feature ‘small groups’ that promote a sense of team, personal connections, and conversation. Our teachers are community volunteers.

​

Student fees: $40 per semester; all learning materials are provided at no cost to the student.

How to register:

  1. Click here and complete the online intake form;
     

  2. Attend one registration event in-person and take the placement test, including a speaking and listening assessment (the test + registration process can last from 2 to 3 hours).

    *Note: we won't call or email you to schedule an appointment. Just come to one of the three registration events.
     

Cost:

$40 – Cash or Debit/Credit Card.

We will collect the payment at the time you are signed up for a class.

  • To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, a resident within the Houston Metropolitan area, and not currently on probation for a violent crime.

  • Fill out the online form before attending a registration event 

  • Filling out this form does not guarantee a space at the registration event and/or our classes.

  • Not all days, times, or levels are available at all locations

  • Photo ID is required for registration

  • Limited spaces available at each event

  • First come, first served

Special Classes

MAM offers Special Classes to give students extra practice. These shorter classes are available to current or former ESL students and can be taken in addition to regular English classes. Best of all, Special Classes are FREE!

 

If you are a registered MAM Literacy Advance student, you can sign up for Special Classes. Please contact your class coordinator for more information or to sign up for a Special Class.

Important Information:

  • Eligibility: Special Classes are only available to current or former ESL students at MAM Literacy Advance.

  • By Level: Special Classes are organized by English level. Be sure to sign up for a class that matches your level.

  • Registration: Please contact your class coordinator to sign up.
