Full-Time Contract with AmeriCorps – Term: August 2022 to July 2023.

The AmeriCorps member is responsible for the direct instruction and coordination of assigned ESL classes at Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM Literacy Advance), Houston, TX. Duties will include working closely with the ESL & Citizenship Program Manager and the program team to ensure that class objectives are being met and English proficiency is improving.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


• Utilize MAM’s ESL teaching standards, programmatic philosophy, best practices, curriculum, and teaching methods • Identify lesson objectives and goals for each individual unit; map out lesson plans and develop teaching strategies and innovative ways to teach the material. 6-8 hours of instructional preparation per week

• Teach 2 to 3 ESL classes - each class is 2-1/2 to 3 hours long and meets two times a week

• Tutor 8-10 hours per week - Individual ESL or Citizenship students or small groups

• Administer tests to students to measure progress and conduct other assessments of students, making appropriate recommendations to ESL coordinators regarding the students’ progress based on their test scores, attendance, class participation, and overall determination to learn English

• Assist with administrative tasks such as entering, creating, and updating students’ information after registration events

• Assist with answering phone calls from the mainline when required

• Measure, document, and maintain records of student attendance in the MAM database and/or software, maintain accurate test scores and ensure appropriate retention rate for all classes for which they are responsible

• Follow up with students who are absent and do not call-in accordance with our attendance policy

• Work with individual students to identify goals and develop strategies to reach their goals

• Attend all teacher orientations and other ESL related training

• Promote classes through various forms of advertisement, distribution of flyers, etc.

• Assist with ESL registrations and assist manager with making this process more streamlined and efficient • Prepare materials and coordinate end of the semester graduations by assisting with the preparation of graduation


REQUIREMENTS:


• Commitment to the MAM mission

• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education

• Computer skills: intermediate Microsoft Office user, including Outlook, Word, and Excel

• Bilingual English/Spanish fluency – read, write, speak

• Ability and willingness to work with people of various backgrounds and all social classes

• Ability to work as a team member with volunteers and paid staff

• Ability to work primarily unsupervised

• Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and goal-oriented

• Effective communication skills, both oral and written

• Legal work status in the U.S.

• Ability to work evenings, at least two nights a week

• Reliable transportation to travel to off-site locations when necessary

• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.


PREFERENCES:


• Experience teaching adults in an ESL, ABE, literacy, or another type of adult educational environment

• TESL/TESOL/CELTA certification

• Experience using ETO (Efforts to Outcomes) Database
