ESL & Citizenship Program Coordinator

Job Summary

This role is an essential component of our Literacy Advance Services team. The Coordinator is often the first point of contact for students and our volunteer teachers, so the coordinator becomes the face and heart of the ESL & Citizenship program. Our coordinators create a level of commitment with the teachers so they are more likely to return to additional volunteer opportunities with MAM, and students are more likely to stay committed to classes, moving them closer towards their goals of speaking better English or becoming a U.S. Citizen.


  • Volunteer Instructors - Our coordinators are with the teachers and students for the ESL and Citizenship group classes from start to finish. This includes vetting the volunteer teachers followed by their supervision, support, coaching, mentoring, training, and monitoring their performance. He or she will implement new initiatives and work collaboratively with other MAM staff and community partners to ensure the success of the students. To best support our volunteer teachers, he or she must stay abreast on new teaching methods, curriculum, technologies, and programs; attend educational seminars/conferences impacting MAM’s educational programming. Through teacher observations, they will ensure areas needing improvement are addressed and that ongoing professional development with ESL program management is achieved.

  • Student Success - The ESL and Citizenship Coordinator ensures that the team is aligned with MAM’s service standards, programmatic philosophy, best practices, and relevant curriculum and teaching methods approved by the organization. Through shadowing efforts and testing, the coordinator will identify students in need of tutoring in ESL and Citizenship to refer them to the tutoring services. The successful candidate will implement program activities such as registration events, teacher orientation, classes, entry, middle and exit assessments, and closing semester events. Through these evaluations, the coursework of the students will be monitored and tested.

  • Literacy Advance Services - When necessary, serve as back-up for volunteers and fill in or assist other coordinators at their assigned locations. For and on behalf of MAM, attend and effectively participate in meetings, trainings, and other events as appropriate. Publicize the program throughout the community and develop strategies to increase student participation, retention, and persistence of current students. Provide secondary front-of-office support, including answering phones and covering front desk from time to time.


To be successful, all candidates:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree.

  • A TESL certification is preferred.

We are seeking a person who:

  • has taught adult ESL learners for a minimum of two years and

  • has experience supervising and coordinating volunteers.

  • Citizenship and Naturalization Test preparation is very helpful in this role.

All applying candidates must have reliable transportation, insurance, and a valid drivers license to commute between the MAM office(s) and satellite locations. Dependent on the classes each semester, this hybrid position will work in our office space, at satellite locations, and remotely at home. Because our classes are for adult learners, our ESL and Citizenship Coordinators must be able to work designated evenings and Saturdays during peak events.
